Bob Boyd, Wilmington, NC |
Last February, PGA Professional National Champion Bob Boyd of Wilmington, NC, thought he was coming down with the flu. After having a fever and feeling run down for a few days, he went to the doctor.
“I thought I would get a Z-pack, knock it out, and be ready to go,” he explained. After undergoing several different lab tests, Boyd was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia and transferred to UNC. He arrived on a Tuesday and began chemotherapy on Thursday. After two rounds of chemotherapy, Boyd went into remission and returned home in late April to wait for a bone marrow donor match.
Not long after, Boyd’s match was found, and he returned to UNC in mid June to prepare for the bone marrow transplant. He received his transplant on June 21, transferred to outpatient treatment in Chapel Hill, and went home on September 21.
“Dr. Shea and his staff were excellent,” said Boyd. “If it hadn’t been for them, it would have been impossible for us,” further explained Boyd’s wife, Pam. “Their comfort was unbelievable.” More
